There can be a rough beauty to Sullivan Fortner's piano playing; the New Orleans native knows just when to add a ruffle or a spike to a performance. He's also expert at zeroing in on the core of a song, whether he's accompanying singers such as Cécile McLorin Salvant or Lauren Henderson, or working in instrumental groups. The trio on 2025's Southern Nights—Fortner, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Marcus Gilmore—take on a stylistically diverse set of compositions that range from famous to obscure.
The title track is an ebullient version of Allen Toussaint's slice of psych-tinged country soul. (Glen Campbell had a hit with the song in 1977.) Right off, Fortner combines inside-the-piano strums—a nod to Toussaint's slightly eerie original?—and right-hand lines that tinkle with jaunty energy. From there on out, the band rivets with a rhythmic bounce that is unmistakably Orleanian.
Fortner again juxtaposes trad and avant elements on Cole Porter's "I Love You." After a bracing solo piano intro—atonal, thorny, hands all over the keyboard—Washington and Gilmore join in. Before long, the trio breaks into a fiercely swinging take on the familiar number. The band generates a flood of notes and hits, but somehow the dense sound is never cluttered.
One standout, "Tres Palabras," is a much-loved 1940s bolero penned by Cuban songwriter Osvaldo Farrés. The late-night-in-old-Havana mood is thick with romantic longing. At one point, after a Washington bass solo that evokes Charlie Haden, Fortner introduces a bluesy phrase that he repeats again and again, subtly varying it with each iteration.
Southern Nights includes a pair of pieces by artists who deserve wider recognition: "Again, Never," a ballad by bassist Bill Lee (film director Spike Lee's father), is exquisitely rendered and quite moving; the fine "Discovery," by pianist Consuela Lee (Bill Lee's sister), is both modernist and tuneful.
The album closes with "The Organ Grinder," a post-bop gem written by trumpeter Woody Shaw. Fortner explores the composition in almost breezy fashion: his interpretation is as casual as it is masterful. © Fred Cisterna/Qobuz
